PTSA Agenda & Potential Goals

Our first PTSA General Meeting is Monday, September 8th at officially at 7 pm.  There is a chance that the shared meeting time will start at 6:30 pm, so you may want to come early to hear from Principal Brown and Instructional Coach, Karen Goodman.

Agenda:

Click here for the PTSA_Agenda_090814.  Of note, we like to commit our meeting time to discussions and decision making.  Consequently, committee reports will be presented with the notes from the meeting.  If you have anything you’d like to discuss, please contact Jody Dickson, jody@dickson.org, to get on the agenda.

Potential Goals:

The following are some potential goals to review before the discussion about them during the meeting:

–          Increase male participation in our school’s annual volunteer opportunities to 40 volunteers, a 30% increase from last year’s male volunteers. When fathers are involved in school, children learn more, perform better in school, exhibit healthier behavior, have fewer discipline problems, are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities and enjoy school more.

–          Offer enriched learning opportunities that complement the classroom curriculum. We commit to offering at least one enhancement opportunity to every grade and in a variety of formats including field trips, assemblies, guest speakers and hands-on experiences. We also commit that at least three of these enrichment opportunities will be field trips. These opportunities offer our children different ways to learn what is being taught in the classroom and will help bring some new and diverse topics and experiences to our children.

–          Increase participation in the Three for Me program. Our goal is to have 115 commitments (75% of enrollment) and 100% fulfillment of those commitments. We also commit that that 15% increase from last year (15 people) will be new volunteers at this school year. Volunteers expand our ability to meet the learning needs of our students and lighten the workload of the staff so they can focus on teaching! Once volunteers understand the variety of ways they can contribute to the school and have successful and meaningful experiences, then our school, staff and students will benefit from a diverse and deep volunteer pool throughout the school year.

–          Offer at least one parent feedback opportunity in every month of the school year in a variety of formats, including but not limited to surveys, polls, email requests, website forms, and public forums. If the school offers a parent feedback opportunity, we will promote it to the PTSA community. In order for us to meet the needs of our school community, we need to know what they are. Parents have direct insight into how the school impacts their students and our community.  Parent feedback reveals opportunities for us to improve as an organization and as a school. We want parents to intrinsically know that they have a voice in our school. As part of this goal, we will seek opportunities to measure the amount of feedback we receive so we can increase it in future years.

Welcome to another wonderful school year at Coal Creek Canyon K8.  We are excited for this new school year!  If you are not familiar with your PTSA, we are your Parent Teacher Student Association.  We are a group of dedicated individuals who work together to enhance our children’s learning experiences and opportunities at our school.  We do this by:

  • Hosting events, assemblies, field trips and after school programs that complement what our kids are learning in the classroom.
  • Organizing volunteers to support our teachers and school staff.
  • Fundraising and buying equipment and supplies that our teachers need in their classrooms but otherwise wouldn’t have access to.
  • Advocating for our children and their needs

Participating in the PTSA is a great way to stay connected to what is happening in our school community.  We count on your support.  Join the PTSA by using the form included with this Friday Notes or by going online to our NEW website (more info below).  You may turn forms in to the school office or bring it to our pre-Back-to-School night BBQ on August 26that 5 pm. We look forward to seeing you there and at many of our upcoming events!

NEW!!  CCCK-8 PTSA Website!!

We have officially launched a brand new website for the school community: http://www.ccck8ptsa.org  This website will serve as the resource for all things PTSA, including after school programs, volunteer opportunities, and academic resources to help you support your child’s education and our school.  The website is available for you to use wherever and whenever is convenient for you.  Your student’s Friday Folder today will have a handy magnet with the URL, so you can put it on your refrigerator to remind you when you need more information about our opportunities at the school.  There is a lot of great information and resources on the website, so please take some time to check it out.  http://www.ccck8ptsa.org

That said, I hope this is the first and last BIG entry the PTSA puts in the Friday Notes.  From this point forward, we’ll try to keep it to a simple list of the updated information you’ll find on the website.

We also have a Facebook community at: www.facebook.com/CCCK8PTSA, if that is more your style.  Like us on Facebook for updates more of the social variety!

CCCIA Building

I need not tell you that last year’s flood had a huge impact on our school and community.  This community event is meant to celebrate our resiliency through last year’s flood AND to support those that are still struggling with the impact.  PTSA is a partner organization helping plan this event.  If you are interested in being part of the planning committee, please contact Tami Lawson, tamikrislawson@hotmail.com.

Business Sponsors

CCCIA Logo-1

Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association

Your PTSA has been busy this summer recruiting business sponsors for our initiatives.  We are happy to announce that the CCCIA agreed to sponsor an enrichment program from the Arvada Center around Interactive Storytelling.  After this program is offered at the school, we are going to offer our first annual Oral Interpretation Festival early in 2015.  This is a huge investment, so thank you CCCIA for supporting us in this effort and supporting our community school!

PTSA Help Wanted:

Click to View Volunteer Opportunities on VolunteerSpot

Also new this year, we have launched a new centralized Volunteer Spot sign-up webpage: http://vols.pt/7Yrr2V  Instead of us sending you separate forms for each volunteer opportunity that we think you may be interested in, you can now access ALL volunteer opportunities from one page:  http://vols.pt/7Yrr2V  This will help you find opportunities that may be outside of your child’s classroom or when you have last minute availability to volunteer and want to see what is available right now!  We will update this page with new stuff opportunities as they come up, so come back often to find your perfect volunteering opportunity!

A website for you and our CCCK-8 family

websiteconstruction As we welcome you to the 2014 – 2015 school year, we also want to welcome you to this new online resource! Part of our organizational mission is to foster communication between the home and the school. We strive for our children to have the best learning experience possible at Coal Creek Canyon K-8. Engaged families and community members will help make that possible. We launched this website to be a resource for our school community so that people can be engaged in what we are doing as an organization for our school. This website is a 24/7 resource for you to get what you need to help your own children and our school as a whole.

On our website you’ll find:

– information about the programs and events we offer throughout the year. Most are offered as a way to offer our students new experiences and different ways to learn. You will find information about all our after school programs, fun family events, and in school enrichment offerings.

– links to all our volunteer sign-up forms. Last year, we converted the bulk of our volunteer sign-up to online forms on Volunteer Spot. You will be able to access all of those forms on this website when it is convenient for you. If you are looking for a long term or right-away volunteer opportunity, please visit our Volunteer page.

– the ability to join the PTSA and make donations. You can find out more about our business sponsors, including how to become one! Needless to say, a lot of what we do requires money, so you’ll find information on all the different ways you can support us financially.

– ancillary resources to help you support your students, our school and public schools in general. We have built out a robust section of parent resources to help you help your students with specific curriculum or homework issues. (Feel free to contribute to this, if you have any favorites you use to help your students that you’d like to share.) Also, there are links to Jeffco School District as well as Colorado and National PTA information on our website.

Like all websites, this is a living environment, so come back often! There will be updates every week. You can count on the PTSA section of the school’s Friday Notes email to be a lot shorter as it will mostly refer you to updates on the website!

This website was made possible through a LOT of hard work this summer, particularly by Russ Baker, a parent at our school. We would like to send a HUGE THANK YOU to Russ for putting in a lot of volunteer time building the website and pulling this together for us. I’d also like to thank Maria McVey and Molly Hammar for their work in this effort as well.

Please take a moment to take a look around and get familiar with this new website. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, concerns, please feel free to email Jody Dickson at Jody@Dickson.org or Maria McVey at mcveycjam@gmail.com. keepcalm
