Legislative Chair or Co-Chair

Are you passionate about politics?  Are you glued to the news and can’t wait to share what you heard with your friends and family?  If so, then we have a position for you!  Your CCCK8 PTSA is looking for a Legislative Chair or co-Chair.  Don’t let the title scare you!  We simply need someone to keep the PTSA and our school community informed of what is happening around education policy and politics.  This person would send regular updates about what is happening and be a resource to parents if they are curious about education policy.  We especially would like the help keeping families informed about our own school district, but you may expand to state or national education activity, if you want to.  This is especially important this year in the election year, and with the 3A/3B Mill & Bond Levy for the Jefferson County School District on the ballot.   This volunteer opportunity can be very short term as we need it particularly through the upcoming election.  After that, your level of effort is up to you!  Please contact Jody Dickson, jody@dickson.org, if you are interested.

Reflections Chair or Co-Chair
Do you love to be creative?  Do you want to inspire our students to make their own creative original works?  National PTA annually sponsors the Reflections program to do just that.  This year, the theme is:

story

Students are encouraged to create their own original work inspired by this theme, and then submit it for competition.  Categories of submission are: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, or Visual Arts.  As Chair or Co-Chair, you would organize our school’s participation in this event, by encouraging student participation, scheduling afterschool workshop time, collecting the submissions, and setting up the judges and evaluation, and sending our school’s winning pieces on to the next level competitions.  For more information and deadlines, please visit the Jeffco website:  http://www.jcpta.org/programs/reflections/reflections-local-chairs/323-2/  This volunteer opportunity is very short term (active in the fall) and for those energized by creativity.  Please contact Jody Dickson, jody@dickson.org, if you are interested.

8/19/16 Friday Notes

Welcome to another wonderful school year at Coal Creek Canyon K8.  We are excited for this new school year!  If you are not familiar with your PTSA, we are your Parent Teacher Student Association.  We are a group of dedicated individuals who work together to enhance our children’s learning experiences and opportunities at our school.  We do this by:

  • Hosting events, assemblies, field trips and after school programs that complement what our kids are learning in the classroom.
  • Organizing volunteers to support our teachers and school staff.
  • Fundraising and buying equipment and supplies that our teachers need in their classrooms but otherwise wouldn’t have access to.
  • Advocating for our children and their needs.

Participating in the PTSA is a great way to stay connected to what is happening in our school community.  We count on your support.  Join the PTSA by using the form included with this Friday Flyer or by going online to our website at http://www.ccck8ptsa.org  You may turn forms in to the school office or bring it to our pre-Back-to-School night BBQ on August 23rd at 5 pm. We look forward to seeing you there and at many of our upcoming events!

PTSA Upcoming Events:

Pre-Back to School Night BBQ
Tuesday, August 23rd
5:00 – 6:15 pm
Join us at CCCK8 school and enjoy dinner along with your Coal Creek Canyon K8 family.  Please bring your family and a side dish or dessert to share.  PTSA will provide the main dish and beverages.

Back to School Night Presentation

We’ll kick off the evening with a presentation by the school and the PTSA.  We’ll be sharing information about what we do, what we can do for you and what we need from you.  After the all-school presentation, there will be two sessions in each classroom for individual grade level presentations.  ALL students will be expected to stay with their parents during the presentations.  We want to make sure that #1.) all the students stay safe during the evening and that #2.) The students hear what their parents hear from their teachers about their expectations.

Help Welcome our Kindergarten Families

Just a few days left of summer break!  We are quite excited to be back with our school family this Thursday!  For families that are new to our school, we usually open the first day of school with a flag ceremony outside by the front doors.  We will sing the school song, introduce the staff, and get the new school year kicked off with great energy!  Friends and family are welcome.  Students and family may start to arrive no earlier than 8:30 am.

Immediately after the flag ceremony, we will have our Yahoo-Boohoo breakfast in the library for our Kindergarten families.  If you do NOT have a kindergarten student this year, please help us welcome the kindergarten families by volunteering at or donating food to this event.  The sign-up is available online at http://signup.com/go/nKE1qX

See you in a few days!

We are building a summer parent resource page on the PTSA website.  These are camps, reading programs, activities that may be of interest to you to continue learning in the summer.  If you have any favorites, please share them with us and we’ll include on the website.  Please send to Joanna Waggoner if you have any you’d like to share.

For example, here are some summer reading programs:

Boulder Public Library
Gilpin Public Library
Jefferson County Public Library Summer Reading

Did you know that kids who don’t read and keep their minds active over the summer can lose up to two months of learning progress by the time school begins in the fall?

Of note, the Jefferson County Public Library is awarding $300 to one school in four categories with the highest percentage of finishers based on school enrollment.  Shall we go for it!?!

Stay tuned on our website http://www.ccck8ptsa.org or on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/CCCK8PTSA for more information on upcoming programs. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Volunteers are needed for the all-school field trip to Golden on May 23rd.  If you are available to help, please contact your student’s teacher.

Community Opportunity:
This is about a volunteering position in the canyon which will take 5 hours three times a year.
The position involves the pancake breakfast at the CCCIA hall here in the canyon three times a year. The position would require you to set up child volunteers to help service at the breakfast and then be at the breakfast to help supervise them and make sure they stay on task. So it generally takes an hour our less to get two children per time slot ( 7-9 &9-11) to sign up and then 4 hours the day of the breakfast. There are three breakfast per year; the Saturday before Valentine’s, the Saturday before Mother’s Day and one Saturday in September.
If you or anyone you know would be interested in taking over this position please have them email Abbie Koorndyk. Her contact information can be found in the school directory.

Stay tuned on our website http://www.ccck8ptsa.org or on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/CCCK8PTSA for more information on upcoming programs. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Support our School:

kingsoopers

Do you shop at King Soopers??

If you do, please pick up and use your CCCK8 PTSA King Soopers’ reloadable gift card.  When you use your King Soopers card a portion of your spend gets donated to our CCCK8 PTSA and supports our teacher supplies, school assemblies, and new equipment.  If you don’t have a King Soopers’ card, just pick one up from the office at the school.  Then you load some money on it and do your normal grocery shopping.  It is reusable, too, so you can repeat the process as often as you need to.  It is an easy way to support our school by doing what you need to do anyway!  Feel free to pick one up for your friends and family too!  (Of note, this is different from the King Soopers cards that support Outdoor Lab.  For Outdoor Lab cards, you need to get the application from Sheryl Roberts.)

book swap

Donate your books to the annual Book Swap!  Clear your book shelves of unwanted, but gently used, books.  There is a collection bin near the entrance of the school.  The bin is for drop off only.  We will sort the books based on reading level and then on Tuesday, May 24th, every student will be able to choose a book from the swap for summer reading!  Bring your books in as soon as possible.
